SAE Visit 1

For my first ever SAE visit, Mrs. Anderson and myself decided to visit two students who worked at a local feed and supply store. These students are both actively involved in Manheim's FFA chapter and work after school as part of their SAE projects most days. Both hailing from family farms, it was easy to spot their work ethic and drive when it came to their employment at G & G Feed & Supply. G & G Feed & Supply is a family owned and operated business located in Manheim PA that has been an active part in the local community since 1962. They sell a variety of items from garden, lawn, tools, equine, pet, feed, clothing, wood pellets and shavings. Further, G&G provides shipping and delivery options for their customers and several items to rent including log splitters and spreaders. Speaking with these students, I was told they have a wide customer base with a large number of horse owners and large scale hobby farmers.

The preparation for this visit was as easy as calling one of the students and asking if we could stop by! The student checked with their manager and we were all set to stop by. Mrs. Anderson and I stopped by after school and had the opportunity to look around and then chat with the students/other employees. Looking at their SAE projects themselves, this seemed like a great fit after speaking with both students. Manheim typically places/sends students to work with G&G so the business is understanding and well suited for high school student employment. The students seem happy and grateful for the opportunity to work for this family business and felt valued and treated well. Further, they seemed excited and knowledgeable of the feed and other supplies sold by the facilities.

Here at Manheim, every student has an SAE project which begins in their Introduction to Agriculture Science class. While in this class, students develop their SAE and ultimately use the project as their final assignment for the class. Using AET as their record book, students print out a complete report which is then carefully graded by Mrs. Anderson.
