Fall 2021 Week 3 Investment
Let's Dive into Week 3 in 3... 2... 1... !
3 connections to student teaching internship
- "Through written plans, the teacher is bound to develop sensible
and complete organization and structure that can be made clear to students.
Otherwise, organization is fragmented and the structure of the subject matter
and learning experiences is much more imperfect." …I choose to include this quote because I feel it demonstrates the importance of writing clear lesson plans. It can be very tempting to get lazy when physically planning my classes. Labs for example are a place where it might be tempting to not follow a direct lesson plan. This quotation demonstrates why lesson plans are important for both student development and teacher readiness, definitely something to keep in mind during my student teaching experience!
- "Before teachers of agriculture begin planning a unit of instruction, they need to
think about the local situation in which the unit will be taught. Teachers do not
plan to teach information for information’s sake; rather, they plan to teach what is relevant to the students’ specific situations and needs"... Looking at my student teaching experience I think it can be very easy to get caught up in the "information for information's sake" situation. As a student in high school it often felt like I was being force fed information just because. As an educator I want to provide my students with valuable information that has tangible relevance to their lives, future careers, and interests. In other words, its just as important for me to tell my students the why. Additionally, I need to keep my instruction relevant to my students. Tailoring the class to their specific needs makes it much more useful for them.
- "Once a complete unit of instruction is written, it will have to be revised and updated periodically. As new technology develops, key points and approved practices will have to be updated to include the current best way of doing things." … As I begin diving into my unit and lesson I want to use different resources available to me to more efficiently complete all my lesson plans. Something I need to keep in mind is "how relevant is this resource to spring 2022?". Some materials might be decades old and needs serious re thinking. While some sources might have been great in 1990, they may not be as relevant for my students now.
2 connections to other courses that are part of your #TeachAg Journey
- "Planning for instruction is the key to becoming an effective teacher."... Looking back at some of the concepts we have learned in our #TeachAg journey, I think this quotation is related to the "B" (business like behavior) in the "BECOV" acronym from Rosenshine and Furst. Planning my lessons and accounting for change in my class is are both part of being best prepared for my students.
- Looking at this diagram it reminds me of the 3 circle model we've talked about in nearly everyone of my AgEd classes. While each of these components is important on their own, they should all work together to best suit the students. Without connecting "learning goals" to "feedback and assessment" students will be left with a disconnected class, similarly, not connecting SAE to classroom instruction leads to an unbalanced Ag program.

- As an educator it is important to reflect not only on our students' performance but also our own performance. Reflecting on what we do well and what we need to work on is hugely important as a young educator. I found this teacher evaluation assessment that is used by administration to rate their teachers. My thought was that it could be used as a personal tool to evaluate oneself.

Here's a fun video from class this past week as we did class activities to reflect the BECOV acronym mentioned earlier!
Nell,
ReplyDeleteThat self-assessment tool is awesome! Excellent find! Also love how you connected planning with business-like behavior in BECOV. It is evident if proper planning did not occur in a business, and the same is true with our classrooms.
